Foundation Course in Dance & Musical Theatre
This is a one year course.
Since its introduction in 2009, the one year Foundation Course has proved to be highly successful as a stepping stone for students who wish to successfully audition for further training. Of our 2016 cohort 97% gained places on full time 3 year vocational courses.
The aim of the Foundation Course is to raise the level of each student’s technique and performance ability and combine this with the knowledge and confidence to successfully audition for further training at a vocational college or university with the improved chance of gaining scholarships and funding for their future training.
Alongside a solid grounding in the techniques required for dance and musical theatre training, the course also emphasizes the importance of performance ability and self-presentation.
During the final half term of training the students work towards an end of course performance to showcase what they have achieved.
Being a part of the Foundation Course at Urdang gave me the chance to experience professional training, whilst also being able to have fun and learn about the industry I want to go in to. The course helped me improve not only in my technique and ability in each discipline, but also in my confidence and audition etiquette. I enjoyed every minute of the course, and would do it all over again if I could.

Feedback for success
In order to help each individual student achieve their goal Urdang provides regular feedback on an informal and formal basis. This feedback ranges from advice on communication, presentation, performance ability, technical skill and choice of audition material. Tailored advice is given to each individual with regards to appropriate courses and institutions to apply for, and application support is given by the Head of Foundation Course. It is this constant exchange of feedback which ensures that each student is confident and fully prepared to continue their education.
The Foundation course acts as an audition for Urdang Academy in itself, with students being seen by many senior members of the faculty throughout the year in a series of mock auditions. Feedback is given from these mock auditions for students to work on before a final audition for a place on either the Diploma or Degree at the end of the course.
The Urdang Academy Foundation Course is a full time course which is studied for up to 28 hours over 28 weeks in 2 terms.
