Urdang Academy is situated at the heart of the Islington community. At Finsbury Town Hall, running alongside the Academy, there are dance classes for the local and wider community in many disciplines such as ballet, ballroom, breaking, belly dancing, flamenco and fencing. The well-established Pilates school (Pilates-Based Body Awareness) run by Chris Hocking is also in residence. Most classes operate on a drop-in pay-as-you-dance basis and do not need to be booked in advance. However, there are one or two exceptions, which have to be booked through the teacher, so please check carefully before attending.
There are also Barn Dances, Tea Dances and performances by the Academy students. Urdang also work in the community with organisations such as the Stuart Low Trust, where they have given presentations of their work, EC1 New Deal, St. Luke’s Timebank and Islington Primary Care Trust. Students are frequently being invited to perform at local fairs, community events and launches in front of dignitaries such as the Mayor and local councillors.
Student productions are given in the Great Hall and are available at subsidised rates to local residents and educational establishments. This, the Council Chamber and other spaces are available for hire by Islington schools and colleges, local arts, community and voluntary organisations.
