Life @ Urdang
The Urdang Academy is located in Central London. Studying in Europe’s largest city allows a multitude of choices that can make for a buzzing student life!
Located near the hub of the West End, the Academy is in the centre of the action. Our prime position makes it easy to invite industry professionals to pop down the road and work with our students so that we remain at the forefront of performing arts training.
The Urdang and its faculty prides itself on ensuring student welfare is of utmost importance during their training. Our reputation is built on an ethos of caring and nurturing individuals and this care has been recognised by Ofsted.
Urdang places great importance on the pastoral care of its students, conscious that for many this will be their first time living away from home, with many new to London. The Academy’s pastoral team provides student support and advice in many practical areas and can offer advice on accommodation, finance and related issues. Urdang operates an open door policy so students may have private interviews with the Principal, the Pastoral Liaison Officers or other staff members on request.
Students are overwhelmingly positive about the course and the care that is taken of them. – Ofsted
A performer’s body needs to be kept in peak physical condition in order to cope with the demanding nature of training in the performing arts. It is Urdang’s mission to keep our students’ injuries to an absolute minimum.
Our team of therapists can attend to student injuries quickly and efficiently so that time away from training is minimised. The majority of injuries and accidents can be treated on-site in our fully equipped treatment facilities.
Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Pilates, Sports Massage, Reflexology and Aromatherapy make up the treatments on offer to help support student rehabilitation from injury.
The quality of the injury support is outstanding. – Ofsted
Students are strongly advised to take out the private insurance option, which is offered to all new students during induction. Referrals to specialists and private hospital treatment may be needed in certain circumstances and the insurance option allows for quick and efficient specialist care.
Living in London
London is a unique metropolis offering a diverse set of experiences and activities to choose from. There are many advantages to living in such a central location. Students are in the hub of activity, on scene and surrounded by creativity for fashion, photography, the arts and much more. Living the London dream with endless experiences to choose from!
Living in central London isn’t as expensive as you might think! Generally our students do not live in high priced Islington, but in other more affordable surrounding areas. The Academy’s central location makes it amazingly accessible, with London’s fantastic transport network making it quick and easy to reach Urdang from various areas by bus, underground or train.
Situated near West End Theatres, students are only short tube ride away, or 8 bus stops from the action. Sadler’s Wells is also just down the road making it easy to be inspired by the numerous shows on offer.
Students 18 and over
The Academy participates in Transport for London’s Student Discount Scheme. This provides travel discounts on TFL and National Rail Services within the Greater London area. To apply go to www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets (see 18+Student). Students will need their unique student number which can be found on their invoice. See Transport for London website click here.
Students under 18
Students are eligible for a young person’s card and can apply online at www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets or pick up a form at a post office.
Please note that online applications for both of the above schemes close on the 31st of July and open on the 1st of September. You will not be able to apply until the scheme re-opens on 1st September and after you have enrolled on the course.
There are a variety of student halls and hostels available all over London. We survey current students about their accommodation and also visit various student accommodation locations to ensure they are suitable for our students.
We can provide a list of accommodation options and advice based on these surveys, but cannot accept any responsibility for accommodation taken up by students, which do not meet the expected standards. Students are advised to always ensure they visit any accommodation they intend to take up and make sure they have signed a contract BEFORE they hand over any deposit money.
Students can log on to the Academy Facebook page at ‘Starting Urdang Academy 2015’ where they will find information about other students wishing to share accommodation or who have rooms available to rent.
Please contact our Pastoral Liaison Officer, Tracy Coupe for further information.
Finding a Doctor
Once students have decided where to live they are then required to register with a General Practitioner Doctor (GP) in their area. Names and addresses of GPs in your area can be obtained from your hostel or local library. Students can also log on to www.nhs.uk and use the ‘Find and choose services’ link.
