Israel Donowa (18) and Charlotte Scally (20) currently studying at The Urdang Academy have beaten hundreds of other young hopefuls and have earned a prized place in the BBC’s prime-time dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance”. The series started with a shortlist of 20 hopefuls who are currently battling it out on the dance floor in this popular competition to find Britain’s favourite dancer.
Israel Donowa is in his final year of a Dance Diploma and the youngest of the 20 competitors. He may be young but he has already performed alongside Flo Rida and Whitney Houston. Israel, known affectionately as “Happy Feet”, chose Urdang because of its reputation and strength in all dance styles. Absolutely determined about his future in dance, he showed total dedication to his training when cast in the Thriller tour, Israel declined because of college commitments.
Israel’s ambition is to become a well-known choreographer and through teaching, to inspire other young people to dance. From Hackney, he sparked his passion for dance at 13 when he went to a hip-hop dance show, from there he attended classes and joined Impact Dance, a Hip Hop dance group, who recommended that he apply to Urdang to train professionally.
Charlotte Scally is in her second year of a Dance Diploma. Having always loved dance she trained and performed from an early age in disco freestyle and tap. Charlotte auditioned (and got scholarships from) several top dance colleges but chose Urdang as she knew she could be herself and would be encouraged to find her own unique style and not just fit in.
Charlotte is from Watford and is relishing the opportunity of taking part in BBC One’s So You Think You Can Dance and is finding it highly rewarding to be working with a range of top choreographers and dance styles. Inspired by Arlene Phillips and Sheridan Smith in her role in London West End’s Legally Blonde, Charlotte’s own ambition is to be chosen for a West End lead or to tour with a show.
We wish them both “All the Best”
